This is a portrait of me and my beautiful daughter
When I was growing up, my mother filled our house with a collision of colour and texture. Somehow, amongst the clutter, it all co-existed in such a way that made sense to us, and we learnt to appreciate it as we carried on with our daily business. She showed me that colour was not something to be afraid of. Rather, if we were bold and courageous with our use of colour, we could celebrate the joy that colour brings, and marvel at the power it has to dramatically change the personality of a space. My mother believed that there were no rules when it came to the merging of the colour palette - and in many respects I believe that she is right. You see, colour has its own attitude. In its own way, it's brave, and I guess it's this sense of conviction and spiritedness that's so appealing to me. Each of us is surely a product of our upbringing, and the art I create reflects mine, and the love that I have developed for bold and simple statements. I once asked some friends to describe my style of painting. Some said that they saw a Picasso influence, others saw Pop Art. My brother just shrugged his shoulders and told me it looked like a bunch of cartoons. Whatever box it might belong in, whatever else it is, it is my style, and on this much we are all agreed. My home is in Melbourne, Australia, and there's lots to love about this city. As well as painting pictures, I am a mother, a daughter, a sister, a cousin and a friend to some very special people. |
